First Communion Photo Session | St. Ferdinand Church

Crystal Lake Family Photographer

If you searched for a First Communion Photo Session on the internet and found this blog post - congrats! You found something that is different, something that is more than just pretty posed pictures, something that is more meaningful and less stressful than a typical portrait session. Yey!

This is a documentary family photography. This is telling your family’s stories with photographs. This is capturing precious moments as they are happening, naturally, without stiff posing and unnatural smiles.

First Communion Photography

Even with the two photos above where we attempted to pose a little bit (for the mom and for the grandma which I always do too if requested by the family) I ended up loving these ones the most. You can tell that the boys are goofing around, they are basically done with “the whole thing”, but you can also see their personalities. They are twins but they couldn’t be more different from each other.

Documenting a day of a First Holy Communion

I understand that not everyone may see the value in hiring a photographer for a family event like the first communion. There’s usually a photographer at the church already, so why have your own to document getting ready in the morning or a party afterwards? After all, in the age of smartphones, everyone's a photographer, right?

Well… there's a world of difference between a candid cellphone snapshot and a professionally captured moment. As a skilled documentary photographer, I don't just take pictures, I tell visual stories. Over the years I have trained my eye for composition, lighting, and timing, ensuring that each image is artistic, genuine and unique.

Let’s also not forget that there is so much going on on the day of the celebration that taking photos should be the last thing for you to worry about. As parents you should be present in the moment, enjoying every second of that special day.
